Fighting the Obesity Demon

Ugh, spinach! As obese people we are often
attracted to the aroma of frying bacon or the sight of a chocolate cake. While most of us love life we allow the Obesity Demon to take control of it. Among all demons the Obesity Demon is among the cruelest and most deadly. Unfortunately the ranks of the Obesity Demon are growing and today over 65% of the U.S population are overweight.
Crandall’s film Betty Boop Presents Popeye The Sailor opened in the summer of 1933 as part of the “Betty Boop” series. After a prologue in which newspapers herald the sailor’s film debut, and Popeye singing “I’m Popeye the Sailor Man,” the film featured what was to be the standard “Popeye” series plot, re-enacted with variations by the Fleischers for the next decade: Olive waits for Popeye to disembark from his ship at the dock. Bluto follows the couple to a fairground, where the two sailors compete for Olive’s attentions through feats of strength. Bluto abducts Olive and ties her to a train track. As the locomotive approaches, Popeye and Bluto fight. Popeye defeats Bluto, and, through the magical powers of spinach, is able to stop the train and save Olive Oyl.
We smile when we see Popeye burst open a can of spinach, swallow it and instantly gain these gigantic muscles. Popeye then goes after the demon Bluto and recaptures his love the skinny, emancipated looking Olive Oyl. While these scenes bring a smile to us the Obesity Demon that has invaded our own obese body is not a laughing matter.
As a morbidly obese person many Bluto’s in the form of Obesity Demons have invaded and taken over our body. We can accept defeat or like Popeye go after what is ours and take it back.
Our body is our “Olive” though unfortunately we have allowed the demons to make it look like a gigantic plump olive and not the skinny cartoon Olive Oyl. While we may not want our body to look like the emancipated Olive Oyl, somewhere in-between is probably about right.
Popeye’s spinach gives him his magical powers. Balanced eating including protein, fruits and vegetables can give us ours. Fruits and vegetables fill empty space strengthening our own inert warriors. These warriors in turn chase off the Obesity Demons and day by day return our bodies to us the rightful possessor.
