There are a number of ways that we can loose weight. What most want to learn about when they visit Terminal Obesity or another weight loss surgery site is gastric bypass surgery or lap band surgery. Yet, surgery is not necessarily the best way for many people to lose weight. For others yours truly included surgery has been an ideal way to loose and control my weight. Lets take a look at some of the other ways that weight loss and weight maintenance can be achieved for most. Only by understanding your options will you truly know if bariatric weight loss surgery is best for you.

As fat people most of us have heard over and over again that learning self control is the best way to control our weight. This is no doubt true yet many of us still have difficulty controlling our weight by self control alone.

For some people there are medical conditions that make self control alone more difficult. I am a true believer that heredity and the environment we grew up in also plays a very big roll in our ease or difficulty in losing weight. Even with these conditions if we are able to maintain self control and eat less we are going to lose some weight and maintain a lower weight.

We can also lose weight by eating more instead of less. The trick here is eating more of the right foods and less of the wrong foods. By having a better understanding of what we are putting into our mouth and learning to take control we can certainly do a better job of controlling our weight.

Exercise is another way of controlling our weight. With or without weight loss surgery exercise is one of the most important things we can do to improve our health, lose weight and maintain our weight. We need not work out at the gym for 3 hours a day. Exercise is easy really, just physically do a few of the things that you would use an exercise machine for. Get a push mower instead of a ride on. Wash your dishes by hand instead of using the dishwasher. Walk to McDonalds for your diet coke and Big Mac instead of using the car. [well just skip the Big Mac and fries] Vacuum the house yourself instead of using a maid service. Use the stairs. If you like to go to the gym stop looking for a parking spot next to the front door and instead warm up by walking from a distant space in the parking lot. Avoid the gym and instead take an evening walk after dinner.

The third easy way to lose weight is to worry and fret about it. No, scrap that, but how about setting realistic goals for yourself that you can easily achieve. Do not use huge unachievable steps but little incremental advances to your goal weight. Do not cut out everything at once but break down your goals into daily and weekly things to do. For instance, how about replacing your snack chocolate for a nice healthy apple and going for a 15 minute walk every morning before breakfast. You are the best person to decide on these things but discipline yourself to do it and carry it through. As you succeed at each goal you will gain more confidence and be more assured of success. That is why it is so important to use small achievable goals. Forget about trying for the impossible.

What ever way you choose, just do it and you will be glad that you did!

The holidays times are some of the hardest to lose weight. Most people bring tasty foods and desserts to many parties and get-togethers. For someone that wants to lose weight, the temptations can be overwhelming. However, it is still possible for loosing weight during the holidays to occur.

The two most important parts of weight loss are diet and exercise. On the other hand, it’s not always practical during the holidays. Either someone is staying at a hotel, where exercise options are limited, or they might be staying with friends or family where it is hard to get away. It almost seems rude to turn down any food that is provided at these special events and parties. It is however possible for you to reduce your weight even during the holiday season. Of the choices available, one of them is lap band surgery.

Lap band surgery may not be the best choice for everyone. It is primarily intended for those who have experienced difficulty reducing their weight with any other means. A doctor can implant a lap band at any time, and it may be especially helpful to have it done, right before the holiday season.

If you are unfamiliar with the lap band, it is a band that is put around the stomach to manually shrink the size of the stomach so that you are unable to eat to much. People with diabetes or those that have thyroid issues would benefit from this process a great deal. Imagine how much easier it would be to loose weight without having to deny anything that your body wants. This has made losing weight during the holidays the easiest thing you have ever tried to do.

Lap bands produce the best results when used in conjunction with a healthy diet and proper, moderate exercise. Slow the results that the lap band is designed to give, this is mostly because too much unhealthy foods can. This procedure, along with a sensible diet and exercise, will produce dramatic results. If that is not a great Holiday gift then nothing will be! Loosing weight during the holidays is the best gift someone can give themselves.

If you have been thinking about getting the lap band procedure or want to be lose weight this holiday season, it isn’t too late. The lap band procedure might be the very thing to get your life back under control and moving in the right direction. The fear of holiday parties, rich foods, and rich drinks is now a thing of the past. You can eat things in tiny portions and loose weight. This is sure to be the absolute best holiday season ever.

For me the decision to have gastric bypass surgery did not come easy. I thought about it for years always deciding that I could lose and maintain my weight without surgery. Now in my mid 60’s after years of yoyo dieting the morbid obesity had become even more dangerous to my health. Tired all the time I knew that this morbid obesity would become terminal obesity if I did not get it under control. I was quickly nearing the age of 70 and knew that I wanted to see 80, 90 or even 100. Life is exciting and there is still so much that I want to experience.

If you are like me you toss and turn with such a major decision. It is agony as we bite our nails and pace the floor, hoping that our judgment is correct. When it comes to our health, it is even more nerve-wracking. One irrational move and we could be saying goodbye forever. So how exactly does one feel comfortable deciding on such a plan? With these tips, hopefully you’ll be able to sleep well tonight.

1. Research, research, research. The internet is an informational phenomenon. A library filled with tips, reviews and even support groups. You don’t have to get out of your seat to learn about the different options. For example, go to Google.com and type in “weight loss surgeries.” Gastric bypass surgery, lap band, and plastic surgery are just a few results that may appear. However, don’t take the information as the ultimate truth. Not everything on the web is 100 % true. Use it as a foundation and then consult a professional. The more knowledgeable you are, the more beneficial it will be.

2. Speak to a doctor. If you’re morbidly obese and it’s critical to your health, chances are likely that a physician will evaluate your options. Express your concerns – don’t be afraid to ask questions. Not interested in stomach stapling? Looking for a safe yet effective procedure? These types of questions will help direct you towards the best procedure for your lifestyle.

3. Join a support group for people battling the same issues. Speaking with others who share the same pains and everyday hurdles can be therapeutic as well as informative. They may have experienced weight loss alternatives or have valuable tips and tricks. Hearing honest opinions is always better than marketing spiel. Plus, finding a support buddy could make the process less painful.

4. Is surgery your last resort? Is it a one way street? Be sure to weigh your options. For some, weight loss surgery is not the only answer. Surgery must never be your first choice for it is a life altering decision. Consult a dietician for perhaps you only need guidance. Customized meal plans and exercise may be a better fit. Regardless of the method, if you put in the effort, you’ll get to the same destination. Losing weight and being healthy without potential complications is what you should be aiming for. Surgery should never come before you have first tried other options.

Only after you have first tried other methods of losing and maintaining your weight should surgery become an option. Discuss your options with your Doctor. For me the decision to have gastric bypass surgery has turned the clock backwards for I am filled with energy and truly believe that I just might live to 100.

The decision to have or not to have weight loss surgery aka bariatric surgery is a very personal decision and one of the most serious and life changing decisions any of us will ever make. The decision to have weight loss surgery has taken me years to make and while it need not take that long I would encourage you not to make this decision in haste.

While bariatric surgey is a method of weight loss and weight control it is not the only method. Having bariatric surgery is not the same as cosmetic surgery to make you look more attractive. Bariatric surgery being lap band, gastric bypass or another method should never be your first choice.

Some people have very good success at controlling their weight long term through exercise and diet while others do not. This is our body and our life and therefore the choic of how we treat it are ours. While we may make decisions in consultation with family members, medical professionals and others we must be strong enough to make the final decision on our own.

The following information is from WIN a U.S government agency that in cooperation with health organization and medical professionals provides up to date information on weight loss.

How does surgery promote weight loss?

Bariatric surgery produces weight loss by restricting food intake and, in some cases, interfering with nutrition through malabsorption. Patients who undergo bariatric surgery must also commit to a lifetime of healthy eating and regular physical activity. These healthy habits help ensure that the weight loss from surgery is successfully maintained.

What are the surgical options?

There are four types of operations that are commonly offered in the United States: adjustable gastric band (AGB), Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB), gastric sleeve (GS), and biliopancreatic bypass with a duodenal switch (BPD). Each has its own benefits and risks. To select the option that is best for you, you and your physician will consider that operation’s benefits and risks along with many other factors, including BMI, eating behaviors, obesity-related health conditions, and previous operations.

Is weight loss surgery for you?

Bariatric surgery may be the next step for people who remain severely obese after trying nonsurgical approaches, especially if they have an obesity-related disease. Surgery to produce weight loss is a serious undertaking. Anyone thinking about undergoing this type of operation should understand what it involves. Answers to the following questions may help you decide whether weight-loss surgery is right for you.

Are you:

Unlikely to lose weight or keep it off over the long-term with nonsurgical measures?

Well informed about the surgical procedure and the effects of treatment?

Determined to lose weight and improve your health?

Aware of how your life may change after the operation (adjustment to the side effects of the operation, including the need to chew food well and inability to eat large meals)?

Aware of the potential risk for serious complications, dietary restrictions, and occasional failures?

Committed to lifelong healthy eating and physical activity habits, medical follow-up, and vitamin/mineral supplementation?

Remember: There are no guarantees for any method, including surgery, to produce and maintain weight loss. Success is possible only with maximum cooperation and commitment to behavioral change and medical follow-up-and this cooperation and commitment must be carried out for the rest of your life.
