Weight loss surgery options are available to those who are significantly overweight. If you find that you are obese and simply cannot lose the weight with a standard diet and exercise program, then it may be time to consider your options. There are many surgeries that are now available, such as the Duodenal Switch surgery or the Lap Band procedure. However, before you consider the DS, you absolutely need to know what the disadvantages are.

The Duodenal Switch, or DS, changes how your stomach absorbs foods and fat. The goal is for the stomach pouch to be smaller, roughly one-third to one-fifth its size, and for the intestines to be changed. The small intestine is rerouted so that it is smaller and connects with the large intestine in a different manner. The large intestine is where the food is rerouted and the bile will travel along the small intestine.

the goal is to lessen the amount of time the body has to absorb calories

involves reducing the size of the stomach

DS surgery would require a major operation in order to be reversed

There are some disadvantages to this form of weight loss surgery, as opposed to the Lap Band weight loss surgery, which is less invasive. A small hole is cut in the abdomen and a scope is inserted to place a gastric Lap Band into place along the upper portion of the stomach. The Lap Band is then tightened to make a small pouch. The DS operation requires a larger incision and a more invasive procedure to the stomach and the intestines. This means that there is a longer hospital stay and a longer recovery time.

You must also consider the fact that the Lap Band surgery is reversible, whereas the DS surgery would require a major operation in order to be reversed. That means an even longer time spent under the surgeon’s knife and a longer stay in the hospital. Many people have had severe reactions to the surgery and find themselves constantly at the doctor’s office to remove blockages.

If the disadvantages outweigh the positive outcome of the Duodenal Switch, then it is very important that you listen to your doctor and nutritionist carefully. This is not a procedure that is easily reversible. Gather the information about the surgery and carefully review the advantages and the disadvantages. After you have reviewed the information and statistics you may decide that the gastric Lap Band is the weight loss option that is best for your situation. The choice is entirely up to you.

For many people losing weight is not simply a casual struggle but is a lifelong battle against those unwanted pounds. If you have struggled to lose weight you will know only too well how disheartening the process can be. You try one diet after another, counting every calorie and depriving yourself of all your favorite foods. You join a slimming group to benefit from the help and support of others and even join your local health club, but all to no avail. Perhaps your diet and exercise program works for a while but, as soon as you ease off, the weight comes back and before you know where you are you’re into a cycle of coming on and off diets several times a year.

Today, more and more people in just this situation are beginning to learn about gastric bypass surgery and, in particular, new techniques such as laparoscopic gastric band surgery.

As the number of people who are not simply overweight but are obese grows gastric bypass surgery is becoming increasingly popular, as it provides a fast and, with the patient’s help, permanent solution to the problem of extreme weight loss. Now, if you’re not familiar with the term gastric bypass then learning more about gastric bypass surgery is easier than ever as more and more people are turning to surgical intervention for extreme weight loss and information is now readily available on every aspect of surgical weight loss.

Gastric bypass surgery is a process by which a surgeon creates a new compact version of your stomach designed to restrict the amount of food that you can eat. At the same time, in some types of gastric bypass surgery, part of the small intestine is also bypassed so that you are restricted in the number of calories that you can absorb from the now limited quantity of food that you are able to eat. Surgery has also advanced considerably in recent years and many forms of weight loss surgery, including the laparoscopic gastric band procedure, are designed to be minimally invasive reducing the risks of surgery and recovery times considerably.

Although there are some risks involved with gastric bypass surgery, there are also many benefits in addition to the obvious benefit of losing weight. For example, many patients find that their quality of sleep is improved considerably and those with diabetes find that the condition is very much improved, if not indeed cured. Yet others find an additional benefit in the reduction of high blood pressure and other heart and circulatory problems.

If you are severely overweight then it is important to educate yourself on both the benefits and risks of gastric bypass surgery so that you can decide whether or not this particular route might provide the answer to your weight loss problem. If you think that it might just be the answer, then discuss it with your doctor and see what he says.

It is no secret that America is the most overweight country in the world. Many of our adults and children are many pounds overweight and very unhealthy. We have become obsessed with being skinny whether it is for health or aesthetic reasons. One new procedure to combat obesity called lap band surgery has taken this country by storm.

In the past the only surgical procedures available to drastically change the amount of excess weight a patient was carrying around were liposuction surgery and gastric bypass surgery. Both of these procedures carry huge risks and hefty costs. Many people who undergo liposuction and gastric bypass surgery die every year of complications. These are very serious procedures and have to be thought out completely. These procedures also cost tens of thousands of dollars and are not covered by insurance. Many of the people who need these surgeries the most will never be able to afford them.

One of relatively new options to control weight is the lap band surgery. Within the last decade the lap band surgery has become very popular. It is also becoming more affordable. Although most health insurance will not cover any portion of the costs of lap band surgery, it is much more affordable and less risky than liposuction or gastric bypass surgery. Like any surgical procedure, there are risks associated with lap band surgery but they are much less likely in this procedure.

In lap band surgery, an adjustable ring is placed around the upper portion of the patient’s stomach. This allows the doctor to control the size of the stomach and how much food the patient can eat at one time. The lap band is adjustable and can be changed at any time. This is one of the most attractive aspects of lap band surgery. Unlike the other procedures mentioned above, lap band surgery is completely reversible.

Drastic medical procedures such as lap band surgery are not designed for people who are only moderately overweight. Medical procedures such as these are meant for people who are seriously overweight or obese. You should not have lap band surgery if you are pregnant or have had serious stomach problems in the past. Most people will find that they can lose enough weight to make a marked change in their health by simply changing what they eat and exercising moderately.

Many people do not want to take the long hard road to permanent weight loss and instead opt to undergo a medical procedure like lap band surgery. My advice will always be to eat healthier and exercise if you want a healthier body. Although medical procedures can help control the amount of food you take in, they cannot control how healthy the food you take in is. It is always important to remember how much responsibility you have for your own weight and health.

Fifty years ago if someone told you that you could change the size of your stomach and not compromise any organs, you would have shaken your head in disbelief. Now today, the age of technological advances is changing that opinion.

Lap Band surgery, known to be safer than Gastric Bypass procedures, consists of placing a small silicone band around the top of the stomach. This creates a tiny pouch that not only decreases the size of the stomach, but also limits food intake. As a result, the sensation of feeling “full” occurs much more quickly.

The beauty of Lap Band surgery is that this treatment is painless, quick and relatively simple. Lasting no more than one hour, the patient is put under general anesthesia. Given that this is not a major surgery, hospital stays vary between one to two days. The band can be adjusted even after surgery and does not require any cutting or stapling of the stomach. This factor alone prevents a number of side effects and potential health problems that many patients face when undergoing a similar procedure such as Gastric Bypass surgery.

Worried that you will want to remove it later in life? Not a problem – it can be reversed at any time and does not leave any damage. If you are morbidly obese or have a BMI of 35+, it may be a smart decision to consult a doctor about this procedure. It is a great way to lose weight, feel great and turn everything around, without having to put your life on the line. What’s more, lap band surgery generally does not come equipped with major side effects. While some may experience nausea, infection or hair loss, the majority of patients are fine within a matter of days. Still, it will have a massive impact on your life and future. Eating habits change indefinitely – just because your stomach is smaller, doesn’t mean that you can put anything into your mouth.

For patients who want to jump on the health bandwagon or are in critical heath, Lap Band surgery is certainly a saving grace. Far too often treatments put our lives in danger, but this procedure is not one of them. If you are eligible for this surgery, it will allow you to shed the pounds, without worrying that you won’t wake up to enjoy the new lifestyle.

Gastric banding more commonly known as lap band surgery has become the most common bariatric weight loss surgery in Australia and Europe. Since its approval by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration it has become a very popular method of weight loss surgery in the United States. Usually performed as a laparoscopic surgery the healing time is minimal and patients often leave the hospital the same day. Unlike gastric bypass neither the stomach nor intestines are cut, instead a sleeve or band is used to isolate part of the stomach. The lap band limits the amount of food intake, reduces appetite and slows digestion.

During surgery a hollow silastic band is laparoscopically placed around the upper part of the stomach. The band divides the stomach into a small upper pouch located above the band and below a larger pouch. As with gastric bypass surgery the smaller pouch limits the amount of food that a person can eat at one time. The patients have a feeling of fullness after eating a small amount of food.

Through adjustment of the band the size of the opening between the small and large stomach pouch will control the amount of food that can pass to the lower (larger) part of the stomach. The physician can make future adjustments either increasing or decreasing the opening (stoma) between the two parts of the stomach. This is done by either adding or removing saline from the band, which is connected by a tube to a reservoir that is placed beneath the skin during surgery.

For many the band is an excellent choice. Unlike gastric bypass surgery the band does not permanently alter the anatomy and can be removed. Weight loss is usually not as significant as it is with gastric bypass surgery. It is estimated that most patients loose 40 – 50 percent of their excess weight during the first year or two. Though many others do loose as much weight as those undergoing other forms of weight loss surgery. As far as diet, many patients find that they do not easily tolerate red meat, pasta, rice, fibrous foods and fresh bread.
